Over the last couple of weeks I have conducted a Reading Profile Survey
of 29 students in my Room 15 class at Belfast Primary School in Christchurch.
There were some interesting results:
20/29 students liked reading at school which is 69% of the class.
13/29 students did not like reading for enjoyment which was a real surprise!!
17/29 students thought that reading in their own time made them
smarter or more relaxed which was positive to see. I would like to
do some in class sharing around this to inform and hopefully change
the opinion of the other 12 students.
Only 8 students said that they go to the library to get books to read.
I think they thought that this question related to the public library
as we have in school library visits once a week on a Wednesday.
Three quarters of my students do not have a public library card.
The most popular ‘types of books’ were:
-Novels/chapter books (58.6%)
-Sports books (51.7%)
-Funny books (44.8%)
-Comics and Graphic novels at (34.5%)
These results were not surprising. I have a large number of boys in my class
who are very interested in sports. I was really pleased that novel /chapter books
were the most popular. I think these types of books allow children to have a
deeper focus and can often be more thought provoking.
Most students favourite time to read was before they go to sleep which
seem to be a tradition in our current society.
Looking at the last question 15 which stated ‘Is there anything else you want
your teacher to know about your feelings towards reading’?
A couple of students voiced that they feel really nervous reading
aloud. I will endeavor to focus on whisper reading more with my groups.
-One stated that their reading group is too easy. I am aware of this
particular child and will keep a close eye on their progress.
-A couple of students voiced that they found reading fun.
